National Trust<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>El cuadro &#8216;La muerte del Cardenal Beaufort&#8217;, pintado en 1789 por el brit\u00e1nico Joshua Reynolds,\u00a0ocultaba\u00a0un demonio de\u00a0aspecto\u00a0aterrador bajo muchas de capas de pintura y otras seis de barniz. La criatura infernal asom\u00f3 el rostro durante los recientes trabajos de restauraci\u00f3n llevados a cabo por los expertos del\u00a0National Trust.<\/p>\n<p>Al examinar la pintura de cerca, los restauradores no tardaron en ver que Reynolds no hab\u00eda sido el \u00fanico en pasar el pincel por el lienzo, y, tras quitar todas las capas a\u00f1adidas, descubrieron que, en efecto, los dem\u00e1s &#8216;autores&#8217;\u00a0ejercieron como censores de la \u00e9poca.<\/p>\n<p>El cuadro, que Reynolds pint\u00f3 por encargo de la Galer\u00eda Boydell Shakespeare,\u00a0representa\u00a0la\u00a0escena de la segunda parte de &#8216;Enrique VI&#8217; de\u00a0William Shakespeare\u00a0en la que el rey es testigo de la muerte del cardenal Beaufort e implora a Dios que su t\u00edo abuelo descanse en paz, con estas palabras: \u00abderrota al demonio ocupado y entrometido\u00a0que asedia el alma de este desgraciado\u00bb.<\/p>\n<p>Fiel a la descripci\u00f3n shakespeareana, el pintor incluy\u00f3 en su obra al demonio, que acechaba en la almohada detr\u00e1s del cardenal moribundo. Sin embargo, no muchos apreciaron tanto realismo.<\/p>\n<p>Cuando el cuadro se exhibi\u00f3 por primera vez en la Galer\u00eda Shakespeare en 1789, el demonio gener\u00f3 demasiada controversia, m\u00e1s que cualquier otra obra expuesta, explic\u00f3 John Chu, curador nacional senior de pintura y escultura del National Trust. \u00abNo encajaba con algunas reglas art\u00edsticas de aquellos tiempos el tener una figura ret\u00f3rica po\u00e9tica representada tan al pie de la letra en esta figura monstruosa\u00bb, sostiene.<\/p>\n<p>Emily Knight, curadora de propiedades en Petworth House and Park en Sussex Occidental (Inglaterra), donde se exhibe &#8216;La muerte del Cardenal Beaufort&#8217;, confes\u00f3 a\u00a0The New York Times\u00a0que la restauradora Sophie Reddington tard\u00f3\u00a0seis meses\u00a0en destapar al demonio y dar vida al resto de la pintura, volvi\u00e9ndola m\u00e1s vibrante y recuperando los colores originales, escondidos bajo las capas del barniz amarillento.<\/p>\n<p>Becca Hellen, conservadora del National Trust que particip\u00f3 en el proyecto, se\u00f1al\u00f3 a finales de octubre que restaurar las obras de Reynolds \u00absiempre es dif\u00edcil debido a\u00a0la forma experimental en que trabaja\u00bb y a que \u00abla zona del demonio fue especialmente dif\u00edcil\u00bb.<\/p>\n<p>\u00abPor estar en la sombra, fue pintada con colores marrones tierra y tonos oscuros que siempre\u00a0se secaban m\u00e1s lentamente, provocando efectos de encogimiento. Dado que los medios y\u00a0pigmentos resinosos y cerosos\u00a0de Reynolds no ayudaban al secado de la pintura, no sorprende que el \u00e1rea del demonio fuera un desaf\u00edo\u00bb, indica la experta, que define como \u00abun l\u00edo de interpretaci\u00f3n err\u00f3nea y m\u00faltiples capas de pintura\u00bb, a\u00f1adidas por los primeros restauradores.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><iframe style=\"position: absolute;
