El tr\u00edo de <span data-scayt_word=\"Athens\" data-scaytid=\"5\">Athens<\/span> coincid\u00eda en se\u00f1alar que era una cuesti\u00f3n del momento adecuado. Ni peleas, ni criterios dispares, ni <span data-scayt_word=\"egos\" data-scaytid=\"6\">egos<\/span> en busca de su universo paralelo de gloria, ni agotamiento, ni par\u00e1lisis creativa. La despedida estrictamente musical ver\u00e1 la luz el 15 de noviembre, con el <span data-scayt_word=\"recopilatorio\" data-scaytid=\"7\">recopilatorio<\/span> <span data-scayt_word=\"\u201cPart\" data-scaytid=\"8\">\u201cPart<\/span> <span data-scayt_word=\"lies\" data-scaytid=\"9\">lies<\/span>, <span data-scayt_word=\"Part\" data-scaytid=\"10\">Part<\/span> <span data-scayt_word=\"heart\" data-scaytid=\"13\">heart<\/span>, <span data-scayt_word=\"Part\" data-scaytid=\"11\">Part<\/span> <span data-scayt_word=\"truth\" data-scaytid=\"14\">truth<\/span>, <span data-scayt_word=\"Part\" data-scaytid=\"12\">Part<\/span> <span data-scayt_word=\"garbage\" data-scaytid=\"15\">garbage<\/span>, 1982-2011\u201d. 37 temas emblem\u00e1ticos y tres canciones nuevas (se agradecen teniendo en cuenta su taca\u00f1er\u00eda en el material in\u00e9dito) grabadas despu\u00e9s del \u00faltimo disco: <span data-scayt_word=\"\u201cHallelujah\u201d\" data-scaytid=\"16\">\u201cHallelujah\u201d<\/span>, \u201cA <span data-scayt_word=\"month\" data-scaytid=\"17\">month<\/span> <span data-scayt_word=\"of\" data-scaytid=\"18\">of<\/span> <span data-scayt_word=\"saturdays\u201d\" data-scaytid=\"19\">saturdays\u201d<\/span> y la expl\u00edcita <span data-scayt_word=\"\u201cWe\" data-scaytid=\"20\">\u201cWe<\/span> <span data-scayt_word=\"all\" data-scaytid=\"21\">all<\/span> <span data-scayt_word=\"back\" data-scaytid=\"22\">back<\/span> to <span data-scayt_word=\"where\" data-scaytid=\"23\">where<\/span> <span data-scayt_word=\"we\" data-scaytid=\"24\">we<\/span> <span data-scayt_word=\"belong\u201d\" data-scaytid=\"29\">belong\u201d<\/span>, que se emitir\u00e1 por la radio y se estar\u00e1 disponible en las plataformas digitales a partir del 18 de octubre. <strong>\u201cNos hemos dado cuenta que estas canciones dibujan una l\u00ednea natural a trav\u00e9s de los 31 a\u00f1os en los que hemos trabajado juntos\u201d, <\/strong>ha indicado <span data-scayt_word=\"Mike\" data-scaytid=\"30\">Mike<\/span> <span data-scayt_word=\"Mills\" data-scaytid=\"31\">Mills<\/span> al respecto.<\/p>\n<p>Empecemos por el principio, <span data-scayt_word=\"\u201cBegin\" data-scaytid=\"32\">\u201cBegin<\/span> <span data-scayt_word=\"the\" data-scaytid=\"33\">the<\/span> <span data-scayt_word=\"begin\u201d\" data-scaytid=\"34\">begin\u201d<\/span>, como proclamaban en 1986. Del modesto <span data-scayt_word=\"EP\" data-scaytid=\"35\">EP<\/span> <span data-scayt_word=\"\u201cChronic\" data-scaytid=\"36\">\u201cChronic<\/span> <span data-scayt_word=\"Town\u201d\" data-scaytid=\"37\">Town\u201d<\/span> engendrado en su cuchitril de estudiantes al intento de rejuvenecer de <span data-scayt_word=\"\u201cCollapse\" data-scaytid=\"38\">\u201cCollapse<\/span> <span data-scayt_word=\"into\" data-scaytid=\"39\">into<\/span> <span data-scayt_word=\"now\u201d\" data-scaytid=\"40\">now\u201d<\/span>. De la iron\u00eda del tema in\u00e9dito \u201cHa! <span data-scayt_word=\"we\" data-scaytid=\"25\">we<\/span> <span data-scayt_word=\"get\" data-scaytid=\"41\">get<\/span> <span data-scayt_word=\"paid\" data-scaytid=\"42\">paid<\/span> <span data-scayt_word=\"for\" data-scaytid=\"43\">for<\/span> <span data-scayt_word=\"it\u201d\" data-scaytid=\"44\">it\u201d<\/span> (la versi\u00f3n primigenia de <span data-scayt_word=\"\u201cWhat\" data-scaytid=\"45\">\u201cWhat<\/span> <span data-scayt_word=\"if\" data-scaytid=\"46\">if<\/span> <span data-scayt_word=\"we\" data-scaytid=\"26\">we<\/span> <span data-scayt_word=\"give\" data-scaytid=\"47\">give<\/span> <span data-scayt_word=\"it\" data-scaytid=\"48\">it<\/span> <span data-scayt_word=\"away\u201d\" data-scaytid=\"51\">away\u201d<\/span>) a la renovaci\u00f3n millonaria con <span data-scayt_word=\"Warner\" data-scaytid=\"52\">Warner<\/span> a mediados de los 90. Del cuarteto (con <span data-scayt_word=\"Bertis\" data-scaytid=\"54\">Bertis<\/span> <span data-scayt_word=\"Down\" data-scaytid=\"55\">Down<\/span> en los conciertos la familia era de 5) al tr\u00edo. Del <span data-scayt_word=\"rock\" data-scaytid=\"56\">rock<\/span> alternativo y oscuro con la poes\u00eda cr\u00edptica de <span data-scayt_word=\"Stipe\" data-scaytid=\"57\">Stipe<\/span> a himnos generacionales de arraigo comercial. De cola de rat\u00f3n en la <span data-scayt_word=\"IRS\" data-scaytid=\"58\">IRS<\/span> a cabeza de le\u00f3n en <span data-scayt_word=\"Warner\" data-scaytid=\"53\">Warner<\/span> <span data-scayt_word=\"Bros\" data-scaytid=\"59\">Bros<\/span>. De las melenas y el altavoz en mano, a la cabeza rapada al cero y al antifaz azul pintado. Del sonido s\u00f3rdido de garaje a lo ac\u00fastico, del rebrote de decibelios al coqueteo con la electr\u00f3nica. Del murmurio a las aventuras en Hi-Fi. De rodear el sol, acelerar y estamparse contra el muro de un ahora enjuto. Mejor dejarlo y no ensuciar con baratijas de lat\u00f3n un legado tan reluciente.<\/p>\n<p>Todos estos extremos no son contradicciones sino fases, etapas de un proceso art\u00edstico en constante depuraci\u00f3n. Pero algo com\u00fan <span data-scayt_word=\"subyace\" data-scaytid=\"60\">subyace<\/span> a lo largo de tres d\u00e9cadas, al margen del compromiso social-humanitario y la calidad de las melod\u00edas: el anhelo de evoluci\u00f3n, fruto de la honradez consigo mismos, que <span data-scayt_word=\"inauguraron\" data-scaytid=\"61\">inauguraron<\/span> con cinco <span data-scayt_word=\"\u00e1lbumes\" data-scaytid=\"62\">\u00e1lbumes<\/span> en una peque\u00f1a discogr\u00e1fica.<\/p>\n<p>Hubiera sido relativamente sencillo seguir tocando en ambientes \u00edntimos, en fiestas de <span data-scayt_word=\"Athens\" data-scaytid=\"27\">Athens<\/span> o en programas locales pero <span data-scayt_word=\"\u201cDocument\u201d\" data-scaytid=\"63\">\u201cDocument\u201d<\/span>, con <span data-scayt_word=\"\u201cThe\" data-scaytid=\"64\">\u201cThe<\/span> <span data-scayt_word=\"one\" data-scaytid=\"65\">one<\/span> I <span data-scayt_word=\"love\u201d\" data-scaytid=\"66\">love\u201d<\/span> y <span data-scayt_word=\"\u201cIt\u2019s\" data-scaytid=\"67\">\u201cIt\u2019s<\/span> <span data-scayt_word=\"the\" data-scaytid=\"49\">the<\/span> <span data-scayt_word=\"end\" data-scaytid=\"68\">end<\/span> <span data-scayt_word=\"of\" data-scaytid=\"28\">of<\/span> <span data-scayt_word=\"the\" data-scaytid=\"50\">the<\/span> <span data-scayt_word=\"world\u201d\" data-scaytid=\"69\">world\u201d<\/span> por bandera, les empuj\u00f3 hacia la madurez y la credibilidad ajena.<\/p>\n<p><strong>De pie y arriba (De <span data-scayt_word=\"\u201cStand\u201d\" data-scaytid=\"71\">\u201cStand\u201d<\/span> al <span data-scayt_word=\"\u201cUp\u201d\" data-scaytid=\"72\">\u201cUp\u201d<\/span>)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Todav\u00eda hubiera resultado m\u00e1s f\u00e1cil <span data-scayt_word=\"relajarse\" data-scaytid=\"73\">relajarse<\/span> en 1988 tras fichar por una <span data-scayt_word=\"multinacional\" data-scaytid=\"74\">multinacional<\/span> y entregaron <span data-scayt_word=\"\u201cGreen\u201d\" data-scaytid=\"75\">\u201cGreen\u201d<\/span>, la declaraci\u00f3n de intenciones antes del discurso, un boceto del edificio que van a erigir. Una extenuante gira precede la joya intemporal, <span data-scayt_word=\"\u201cOut\" data-scaytid=\"76\">\u201cOut<\/span> <span data-scayt_word=\"of\" data-scaytid=\"70\">of<\/span> time\u201d, s\u00edntesis del <span data-scayt_word=\"pop-rock\" data-scaytid=\"77\">pop-rock<\/span> con <span data-scayt_word=\"\u201cLosing\" data-scaytid=\"78\">\u201cLosing<\/span> my religi\u00f3n\u201d, su diamante m\u00e1s neto y valioso pese a la erosi\u00f3n <span data-scayt_word=\"medi\u00e1tica\" data-scaytid=\"79\">medi\u00e1tica<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>Huyendo de la <span data-scayt_word=\"autocomplacencia\" data-scaytid=\"85\">autocomplacencia<\/span> y el aburguesamiento, <span data-scayt_word=\"contraatacan\" data-scaytid=\"86\">contraatacan<\/span> s\u00f3lo un a\u00f1o despu\u00e9s con <span data-scayt_word=\"\u201cAutomatic\" data-scaytid=\"87\">\u201cAutomatic<\/span> <span data-scayt_word=\"for\" data-scaytid=\"80\">for<\/span> <span data-scayt_word=\"the\" data-scaytid=\"81\">the<\/span> <span data-scayt_word=\"people\u201d\" data-scaytid=\"88\">people\u201d<\/span>, que los instala en la c\u00faspide de la escena independiente, aunque alg\u00fan bobo, superficial o <span data-scayt_word=\"fan\" data-scaytid=\"89\">fan<\/span> manipulable todav\u00eda se enga\u00f1ara creyendo que <span data-scayt_word=\"U2\" data-scaytid=\"90\">U2<\/span> era la banda del momento (\u00bf\u00bfde qu\u00e9 momento??). <span data-scayt_word=\"\u201cEverybody\" data-scaytid=\"91\">\u201cEverybody<\/span> <span data-scayt_word=\"hurts\u201d\" data-scaytid=\"92\">hurts\u201d<\/span>, \u201cMan <span data-scayt_word=\"on\" data-scaytid=\"93\">on<\/span> <span data-scayt_word=\"the\" data-scaytid=\"82\">the<\/span> <span data-scayt_word=\"moon\u201d\" data-scaytid=\"94\">moon\u201d<\/span>, <span data-scayt_word=\"\u201cDrive\u201d\" data-scaytid=\"95\">\u201cDrive\u201d<\/span> o <span data-scayt_word=\"\u201cNightswimming\u201d\" data-scaytid=\"96\">\u201cNightswimming\u201d<\/span> ocupan estanter\u00edas y se abren hueco en la memoria colectiva musical, como la nostalgia futura que uno intuye despu\u00e9s de vivir una emoci\u00f3n intensa.<\/p>\n<p>Llega 1994 y dos vueltas de tuerca m\u00e1s: la transici\u00f3n hacia el <span data-scayt_word=\"pop-ac\u00fastico\" data-scaytid=\"97\">pop-ac\u00fastico<\/span> que les hab\u00eda abierto las puertas al <span data-scayt_word=\"mainstream\" data-scaytid=\"98\">mainstream<\/span> termina de forma brusca con <span data-scayt_word=\"\u201cMonster\u201d\" data-scaytid=\"99\">\u201cMonster\u201d<\/span>. Nunca mejor dicho: un animal salvaje en plena nostalgia visceral que grita y se revuelca: <span data-scayt_word=\"\u201cWhat\u2019s\" data-scaytid=\"100\">\u201cWhat\u2019s<\/span> <span data-scayt_word=\"the\" data-scaytid=\"83\">the<\/span> <span data-scayt_word=\"frequency\" data-scaytid=\"101\">frequency<\/span>, <span data-scayt_word=\"Kenneth\" data-scaytid=\"102\">Kenneth<\/span>?\u201d, con el <span data-scayt_word=\"riff\" data-scaytid=\"103\">riff<\/span> endiablado de <span data-scayt_word=\"Peter\" data-scaytid=\"104\">Peter<\/span> <span data-scayt_word=\"Buck\" data-scaytid=\"105\">Buck<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>En vez de vivir de la rentas y de su nueva n\u00f3mina, nos regalan <span data-scayt_word=\"\u201cNew\" data-scaytid=\"110\">\u201cNew<\/span> <span data-scayt_word=\"adventures\" data-scaytid=\"111\">adventures<\/span> in Hi-Fi\u201d, a priori una obra menor improvisada entre ensayos y descansos. \u00bfLa verdad? Otro paso adelante con piezas memorables (<span data-scayt_word=\"\u201cElecrolite\u201d\" data-scaytid=\"112\">\u201cElecrolite\u201d<\/span>, <span data-scayt_word=\"\u201cThe\" data-scaytid=\"84\">\u201cThe<\/span> <span data-scayt_word=\"wake\" data-scaytid=\"113\">wake<\/span> <span data-scayt_word=\"up\" data-scaytid=\"114\">up<\/span> <span data-scayt_word=\"bomb\u201d\" data-scaytid=\"115\">bomb\u201d<\/span>, <span data-scayt_word=\"\u201cLeave\u201d\" data-scaytid=\"116\">\u201cLeave\u201d<\/span>, \u201cSo <span data-scayt_word=\"fast\" data-scaytid=\"117\">fast<\/span> so <span data-scayt_word=\"numb\u201d\" data-scaytid=\"118\">numb\u201d<\/span> o <span data-scayt_word=\"\u201cDeparture\u201d\" data-scaytid=\"119\">\u201cDeparture\u201d<\/span>).<\/p>\n<p><span data-scayt_word=\"Bill\" data-scaytid=\"120\">Bill<\/span> <span data-scayt_word=\"Berry\" data-scaytid=\"121\">Berry<\/span> se va en 1997 y la obligada <span data-scayt_word=\"reconversi\u00f3n\" data-scaytid=\"122\">reconversi\u00f3n<\/span> a terceto vuelve a mudar de piel para ofrecer <span data-scayt_word=\"\u201cUp\u201d\" data-scaytid=\"106\">\u201cUp\u201d<\/span>, de sutiles texturas electr\u00f3nicas. El experimento, coet\u00e1neo y similar al majestuoso <span data-scayt_word=\"\u201cPop\u201d\" data-scaytid=\"123\">\u201cPop\u201d<\/span> de <span data-scayt_word=\"U2\" data-scaytid=\"107\">U2<\/span>, obtuvo tan poco eco en las listas de ventas como una convulsi\u00f3n en sus seguidores. <span data-scayt_word=\"\u201c\u201dWhy\" data-scaytid=\"124\">\u201c\u201dWhy<\/span> <span data-scayt_word=\"not\" data-scaytid=\"125\">not<\/span> <span data-scayt_word=\"smile\u201d\" data-scaytid=\"126\">smile\u201d<\/span>, <span data-scayt_word=\"\u201cFalls\" data-scaytid=\"127\">\u201cFalls<\/span> to <span data-scayt_word=\"climb\u201d\" data-scaytid=\"128\">climb\u201d<\/span>, <span data-scayt_word=\"\u201cAt\" data-scaytid=\"129\">\u201cAt<\/span> my <span data-scayt_word=\"most\" data-scaytid=\"130\">most<\/span> <span data-scayt_word=\"beautiful\u201d\" data-scaytid=\"131\">beautiful\u201d<\/span> o <span data-scayt_word=\"\u201cYou\u2019re\" data-scaytid=\"132\">\u201cYou\u2019re<\/span> in <span data-scayt_word=\"the\" data-scaytid=\"108\">the<\/span> <span data-scayt_word=\"air\u201d\" data-scaytid=\"133\">air\u201d<\/span>, iluminan el abanico de posibilidades de <span data-scayt_word=\"REM\" data-scaytid=\"109\">REM<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>Es cierto, <span data-scayt_word=\"Reveal\" data-scaytid=\"139\">Reveal<\/span> (salvable en un 60%) inici\u00f3 el camino de la decadencia confirmado por el infausto <span data-scayt_word=\"\u201cAround\" data-scaytid=\"140\">\u201cAround<\/span> <span data-scayt_word=\"the\" data-scaytid=\"134\">the<\/span> <span data-scayt_word=\"sun\u201d\" data-scaytid=\"141\">sun\u201d<\/span>. El paciente muestra signos de recuperaci\u00f3n en <span data-scayt_word=\"\u201cAccelerate\u201d\" data-scaytid=\"142\">\u201cAccelerate\u201d<\/span> y vuelve a casa para firmar el digno epitafio de <span data-scayt_word=\"\u201cCollapse\" data-scaytid=\"135\">\u201cCollapse<\/span> <span data-scayt_word=\"into\" data-scaytid=\"136\">into<\/span> <span data-scayt_word=\"now\u201d\" data-scaytid=\"137\">now\u201d<\/span>. Con un ejercicio de honestidad mayor, hubieran podido hacer una especie de <em><span data-scayt_word=\"greatest\" data-scaytid=\"143\">greatest<\/span> <span data-scayt_word=\"hits\" data-scaytid=\"144\">hits<\/span><\/em> de los \u00faltimos tres discos y dejarlo en uno solo. Sin rellenos ni f\u00f3rmulas propias ya muy diluidas.<\/p>\n<p>Pero lo importante, m\u00e1s que el proyectil emitido, es el lanzamiento. El camino, pese a alguna zarza o piedra de por medio. El porcentaje global, la regularidad, la constancia. Y en estas virtudes fueron referentes.
